Despite the many benefits of a plant-powered lifestyle for animals, personal health, and the planet, only about 3% of the population is vegan at the present time. Thus, as vegans (or those moving toward a vegan lifestyle), we navigate a path of living and eating differently than most others around us.
Maybe you can relate to these challenges…
- Social gatherings or eating out – you may be the only vegan in your social circle. Beyond the reality of limited food choices, for many vegans, it can be distressing to witness others eating animal flesh and other animal products.
- Cultural and family traditions – Going vegan can disrupt shared traditions and your emotional connections with loved ones, leading to tension, conflict, or disconnect.
- Lack of support with lifestyle change – Navigating your vegan lifestyle can be more difficult when you don’t have support, understanding, and encouragement.
- Relationship dynamics – veganism can be a “lightning rod” issue that triggers communication difficulties and longstanding areas of disagreement or tension.
- Perfectionism – perhaps you are perfectionistic and are super-hard on yourself when you have a setback – and this leads you to think if you can’t be vegan perfectly, maybe you aren’t meant to do this.
- Lack of assertiveness skills – being vegan in a not-yet-vegan world requires us to communicate about our needs and wishes. Perhaps you never fine-tuned your skills for speaking up assertively and effectively.
- Handling stress and pressure – stressful times can throw us off course. You may find yourself tempted to revert to non-vegan food choices (or other choices) that are easiest, most familiar, or comfortable.
- Empathic distress and difficult emotions – the social stressors described above, along with learning about the impact of exploitive industries on animals and the planet, can bring up tough emotions, including sadness, anxiety, grief, anger, despair, or hopelessness. You may find yourself stuffing emotions down – or feel chronically overwhelmed.
By living vegan (or moving in that direction), you are living in a way that honors important values – compassion, ethics, sustainability, social justice, and health. Yet, you may feel attacked or questioned – simply for saying you are vegan.
What I have found in my years of experience as a psychologist, educator, and author is this: If you want to not only sustain your vegan lifestyle, but also experience fulfillment, peace, purpose, and impact, you need to include yourself – and your emotional health – in your circle of care.

About Angela Crawford, Ph.D.

Angela Crawford, Ph.D. is a psychologist, vegan educator, and award-winning author of The Vegan Transformation: A Journey to Heal Yourself and the World (Lantern Publishing & Media, 2025). She became vegetarian in 2007, when a program awakened her to the suffering of animals caused by factory farming. As she continued to learn more about the harms of animal agriculture and other exploitive industries, she moved to a fully vegan lifestyle in early 2019. Since becoming vegan, she has been passionate about bringing her background in psychology to empower people to move toward and thrive with a plant-powered, vegan lifestyle. She knows firsthand the emotional and social challenges that vegans can face – and is passionate about empowering vegans and veg-seekers to thrive emotionally.
With over 25 years of clinical experience, she brings psychology principles to empower people toward emotional well-being, resilience, purpose, and values-aligned living.
